I'm an organ donor. Are you?

Last year I was involved in a couple of initiatives that were geared to get ordinary people to engage in small acts of kindness, that ultimately make a big difference. We're all busy and feeling the financial strain that comes with living in these times, so the idea that you can do something small in order to make a big impact in someone else's life is something that we can all embrace.

One of the small things we can do in order to make a tremendous impact is become an organ donor. By registering as an organ donor, you can save up to 7 lives and if you opt to be a tissue donor - you can impact  many more.

This year I have decided to not only sign up, but also lend my voice to supporting the Organ Donor Foundation - as it strives to raise awareness and encourage people to become organ donors.

Through my work and in my personal life, I have been closely touched by organ donation. I personally know people who are only with us today, because they were lucky enough to receive vital life-saving organs. I know people who have received hearts, corneas and lungs. I also know of people who have died, because as we all know, there is a severe shortage of donor organs.

I always knew that becoming an organ donor made complete logical sense, but like many people I had many reservations about it. For me the hardest part was coming to terms with my own mortality - and in some ways, signing up is acknowledging that one day I will cease to live. I now feel a lot better, knowing that I may save someone else's life when that day comes. Getting informed, and seeing how this simple act can save lives - first hand - has made all the difference.

The biggest mistake we all make is waiting until someone we love becomes sick and is in need of an organ, or waiting until we are sick - before we consider organ donation. This year I am doing my bit to help raise funds for the Organ Donor Foundation, heeding their call to get at least 7 people to sign up and become donors.

Registering is as simple as filling out a form online, and informing your loved ones of your wishes. And it's FREE - the Organ Donor Foundation do everything else...

I strongly encourage you to join me. Get informed, get involved - and potentially make a huge difference to families around the world someday.
